I need to open up; I am deeply sad.
Do you know those days when you wake up and, for a few seconds, forget all your problems? Those few seconds when the world feels normal, until your mind remembers everything and the weight comes crashing down on your chest again?
That was how I felt every single day.
I smiled whenever someone looked at me, made jokes to keep my friends from worrying, and said I was fine whenever my family asked how I was doing. I had learned to lie so well that sometimes, even I pretended to believe it.
But when night came and I was alone in my room, the silence seemed to scream everything I had spent the entire day trying to hide.
I felt like a burden. An insignificant presence in people's lives. I thought that if I simply disappeared, maybe the world would keep turning without even noticing I was gone.
And the worst part wasn't feeling all of that.
The worst part was not being able to explain it.
How could I tell people I was tired of existing without making them feel guilty? How could I ask for help when I couldn't even understand what I needed?
So I stayed silent.
Days passed. Then weeks. I stopped replying to messages, turned down invitations, and began distancing myself from even the people I loved most. Not because I stopped caring about them, but because I started believing they deserved someone better than me.
Until one particularly difficult night, I wrote a message.
It wasn't long. It had no beautiful words or elaborate explanations. Just a few sentences about how I felt, everything I had been unable to say, and how much I wished I had been able to ask for help sooner.
I stared at that message for a long time.
For the first time, I didn't try to appear strong. I didn't write that everything was fine. I didn't hide my sadness behind a joke.
I was simply honest.
And before I could delete everything again, I sent the message to the person I trusted most.
Then I put my phone aside and cried.
I cried for everything I had lost, everything I had felt, and every time someone had asked if I was okay and I had answered yes.
I cried because, deep down, I didn't want anyone to miss me after I was gone. I wanted someone to notice that I was suffering now.
The next morning, I woke up to a notification.
It was a reply.
With trembling hands, I opened the conversation.
The first sentence read:
"I didn't know you were going through all of this."
I kept reading.
"I'm sorry I didn't notice sooner. I don't have all the answers, and I might not know exactly what to say, but I don't want you to go through this alone. Call me. Let's talk, even if it takes hours."
I stopped reading.
For the first time in a long while, I felt that maybe there was still something worth waiting for.
It wasn't a magical cure. The sadness didn't disappear in that instant, and my problems didn't cease to exist. But that day, I didn't have to pretend I was okay.
And sometimes, all someone needs to keep trying is to discover that they can show their pain without being abandoned for it.
...
But wait a second.
Were you worried about me?
Did you feel that tightness in your chest while reading? Did you think about how terrible it would be if someone close to you were going through all of this without you ever noticing?
See? Ever thought about what if this story were true?
What if, while you're reading this, someone you love is smiling right in front of you, answering "I'm fine" and silently waiting for someone to ask one more time?
You may never know how much weight a person is carrying just by looking at them.
So, the next time someone says they're fine, listen. The next time someone pulls away, try to find out why. And if you're the one who's not okay, remember that you don't have to reach your breaking point to deserve help.
