LeQuishaQ exposed
LeQuishaQ, I want to explain why I have a problem with the way you present yourself online. I’m not saying that a white person can’t use GIFs, avatars, or media featuring Black people. The issue is that you’re not just using those images occasionally. You’ve created an identity around presenting yourself as a Black woman, including the name “LequishaQ” and consistently using Black women as your avatars and reactions. At that point, Blackness and Black womanhood become part of the character you’re performing, which is why it can reasonably be described as digital Blackface.
What makes that especially uncomfortable to me is that Black women have historically been reduced to stereotypes like being “sassy,” loud, angry, dramatic, or entertaining, and your persona seems to draw heavily on those kinds of representations. There’s a difference between using a Black woman’s reaction because it perfectly captures how you feel and repeatedly using Black women as your own emotional avatar. One is appreciating someone else’s expression; the other starts to look like you’re borrowing an identity.
The biggest issue is that you can put this identity on and take it off whenever you want. You can present yourself as a Black woman, use the name, imagery, mannerisms, and stereotypes, and then log off and return to your actual identity without experiencing the racism or sexism that actual Black women experience. That doesn’t mean I think you necessarily hate Black people or are intentionally trying to hurt anyone. It means you’re able to enjoy the parts of an identity you find funny or entertaining without having to live with the realities attached to it.
And I think that’s the important distinction: this isn’t about saying white people aren’t allowed to use Black GIFs or enjoy Black culture. It’s about deliberately making another racial and gender identity into your online persona. You can be funny, dramatic, expressive, chaotic, or whatever else you want to be without pretending to be someone you’re not. You can appreciate the GIF without becoming the person in the GIF. That’s why I think the persona is problematic, regardless of whether the intention behind it is just to be funny.
