Believe it or not, the matter is serious. I KNOW NO ONE IS GOING TO SIT DOWN AND READ THIS, BUT: Sometimes I stop to think about how Kovaze is a platform that brings together people of various nationalities. Today, I was reading (to the surprise of many) a news story about some controversial statements made by Brazil's First Lady regarding Discord. I got curious about what people from other countries would think of these statements and the topic itself, especially considering how widely Discord is used here. I’m going to translate the news report from G1 (YOU DON'T NEED TO READ THE WHOLE THING): Brazil's First Lady, Janja, made the statements during a ceremony at the Planalto Palace, where President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) signed a law into effect that increases penalties for those who commit sexual violence against children and adolescents. ➡️ While advocating for a ban on Discord in the country, Janja cited the case of a 13-year-old girl who was allegedly coerced by a group of teenagers into committing suicide during a broadcast on the platform. "I think we need to take Discord offline immediately. We need to block Discord in Brazil, one way or another. I cannot accept seeing a 13-year-old girl mutilate herself live on the internet—on Discord—hang herself, and die. I cannot tolerate a country like that," the First Lady said. "So, we need to find the legal mechanisms. I wanted to ask our ministers—especially the Attorney General—what tools do we have available?" Janja added. Victor Fernandes, the National Secretary for Digital Rights at the Ministry of Justice, stated that the ministry had identified a systemic failure in Discord's child and adolescent protection mechanisms, noting that there wasn't even an age verification process in place. Agree with Cherry on this, I think the situation is horrific and sad, but that is also just the internet in general. If you ban discord, the same things will happen on any single site that allows you to communicate (which is almost every site imaginable.) And yes, that is very scary, which is again why we need to closely monitor what children access SPECIFICALLY when it comes to online activities. Not saying the blame is on the parents which its absolutely not bc how could they know, but it should be made aware of how dangerous the internet as a whole is.

I am so sad and horrified reading about that little girl, it's sick that it happened. I don't think the platform is to blame though, because sadly that kind of thing could happen on any platform. I hope there are severe consequences for the people involved in bullying the girl and encouraging her to hurt herself.

Cherry That seems to be the prevailing opinion around here. I also find that kind of statement problematic, as I don't think simply blocking the platform would solve the issue; it would likely be easy for teenagers to find another place to gather and engage in that sort of behavior. There were some really strange cases on Tengaged BR itself, and that was a site hardly anyone had ever heard of. I can't even imagine how many others like it must exist.
