If you don’t understand ELO:
ELO is just a number that shows how good you are at a game. Everyone starts at 1000 because the rankings really don’t know who is good yet. When you win, your number goes up. When you lose, your number goes down. If you beat someone who is “supposed” to be better (higher ELO), you gain more points. If you lose to someone who is “supposed” to be worse, you lose more points.
At the start of this, everyone is at 1000, so the ranking thinks all players are equal. Because of that, every win or loss feels like a big surprise, and the ranking makes big changes to people’s scores. That’s why MotherFart loses a lot of points for getting 4th place. After more games are played, players spread out to their real skill levels, and the score changes get smaller and more stable.
TL;DR - ELO is a skill score. Everyone starts at 1000, so early wins and losses cause big swings. It stabilizes once players spread to their real skill levels.

the concept of people thinking elo is about comp ability when i’m number 1?? oh my comp beast era
Correct MotherFart. ELO is literally just a reflection of how you placed in the game, not how well you did in competitions. It is comparing how well you placed in the game against other users.
honored my 4th has been the case study <3
MotherFart I used it as the example because you among others don’t understand why that happened LOL
DK no like I can understand, im just saying it feels v flawed when u play a game and win more comps than anyone, place top 4 and still get - points. I get the math LOL im just saying seems like a flawed system for people who are playing good games LOL sasssy girl
MotherFart winning comps ≠ higher placement in the game though. if there was a ranking for just pure competition wins then that would be something completely different
DK so people winning comps doesnt play into the ranking at all its soley based on placement?
Thank you for explaining this bc many of us get why you lose a ton of elo for one loss vs another but it’s very difficult to explain unless you like regularly encounter elo matchmaking/scores (which I do not)
Amandasings04 I love ELO because over time it really does give a great reflection on who performs well. However, it needs a LOT of data for it to stabilize. It’s why right now it looks impossible to gain points / easy to lose. This will change once everyone plays more, I’m assuming that’s why the season is so long.
tea love u
Thank you for explaining even though most people will still be confused or complain.
NicoRobin I’m hoping this at least makes it easier to understand lol
but im really good at games and i have a lower ELO than someone who fucking sucks
Rebranding eventually your elo will match your skill level bc you’ll be playing against the ppl who “suck” and also earning a lot more when you win against ppl who are really high elo
also while 4th takes skill to us, 4th/11 isn’t a particularly great result mathematically
sobriquet Right now yes, and in the future it won’t be as dramatic because the ELO ratings are gonna be larger. So if you get 4th place to 3 users who are all around your ranking, it won’t be as dramatic of a loss
DK 4th will never get you that much is what i’m saying
sobriquet but it could though if you are ranked lower than the other people who got 5th through 11th + the people Above you are higher than you. The complaints I’ve seen are more about how getting 4th nets you negative but not understanding that the people above them were ranked lower than them to begin with. This will change once the ELOs start to seperate from each other based on performance
sobriquet you know how much I HATE to admit when DK’s right but DK’s right
Amandasings04 no he’s not lol you’ll never get more than like 20 for 4th and that’s generous
sobriquet but still getting 4th while having over 5 win in a game to then get - points seems flawed
MotherFart How is it flawed? It’s essentially saying that based on your ranking, you were expected to WIN against the others you were playing against. Since you lost to them, you lose points. It’s not based on the ranking of the game, it’s based on your ranking compared to the others in the game.
DK because assuming someone is "expecting" to win in a game like is silly like wut!! this isnt a sports team where there's clearly a best team because they have loaded players for their abilities. u join against 12 other randoms no one joins with a big advantage unless you are a top 5 comp player and if anything people instantly want higher elo out. Theres no advantage to being high so the "expeccted to win" makes no sense I still love the game, and if you go at the top blog plenty people said it feels flawed too its not just me
MotherFart But as Sin has already blogged about, you’re going to be placed in games with people in similar skill sets than you, so no one is going to gun for “higher elo”. It’s literally matchmaking. I’m going to assume you just want to be placed with randoms so you have a better chance at winning everytime? This levels the playing field for everyone. Just do well at the game.
MotherFart it’s just math
Thank you, DK.
