On the other side spread forests of blackened trees, rivers of lava, ruined fortresses, and structures built from bone. When the gates opened, the angels immediately searched for one another. Sprite naturally assumed leadership, guiding the more vulnerable members toward the celestial ruins. Bubba, Nettles, and Melanie formed the main defensive line, while the faster fighters moved ahead to scout the terrain. The demons reacted very differently. Katie attempted to organize them under her command, but several refused to follow orders. Brat wandered toward the nearest corpses, Manyomash disappeared into the shadows, SurferSorbet began destroying everything around him, and Seong quietly observed the entire battlefield from a distance. Far above the battlefield, Space had taken position on one of the celestial towers. The young angel fired balls of solar energy from his slingshot, striking demons attempting to cross an open field below. His attacks illuminated the battlefield and forced several enemies into hiding. However, Maris had already entered the tower. Camouflaged among the dark vines growing across the stone walls, the forest demon waited until Space focused on another target. She placed a dart into her blowgun and fired. The dart struck the side of Space’s neck. The poison spread almost immediately, causing dizziness, blurred vision, and weakness in his arms. Space still managed to pull his slingshot and release a powerful solar sphere. The explosion illuminated the entire tower, briefly revealing Maris among the vegetation. Space fired again, but his aim had already deteriorated. Maris disappeared behind another wall and fired two additional darts. One caused partial blindness, while the other weakened his legs. Unable to remain standing, Space stumbled toward the edge of the tower. His final solar shot passed harmlessly into the sky before he fell from the celestial structure and disappeared into the darkness below. Nearby, Brookie travelled across the battlefield on her floating cloud. She scattered heart-shaped bubbles around the ruined gardens, hoping to confuse any demon who attempted to approach. Manyomash entered the area beneath a veil of smoke. Brookie surrounded him with dozens of bubbles. Some distorted his perception, while others exploded around his body. For several moments, the demon attacked illusions of Brookie instead of her real position. Realizing he could not rely on sight, Manyomash filled the entire garden with thick smoke. Brookie’s cloud became unstable inside the darkness. She could no longer see the ground or determine where the demon was moving. Chains suddenly whipped through the smoke, each carrying one of Manyomash’s daggers. One blade pierced the cloud beneath Brookie, causing it to dissolve. The angel fell into the garden. Before she could create another bubble, Manyomash emerged from the smoke. His first dagger trapped her weapon, while the second ended the battle. At the edge of the infernal ruins, Fancy discovered Lexus separated from the main angel group. The childlike demon opened several interdimensional portals around him. Knives made from demonic energy began shooting from every direction, each carrying different penalties. Some were poisoned, some caused paralysis, and others could corrode armor or blind their target. Lexus remained calm. His two indestructible angelic arms moved independently around him. Their rapiers deflected the energy knives before they could reach his body. Whenever a portal opened too close, one of the arms immediately attacked it. The destruction attracted SurferSorbet. The enormous Oni entered the burning forest without any concern for the fire. Chibi assumed the giant had come to assist him, but SurferSorbet hated demons almost as much as he hated angels. Chibi released a wave of infernal flames and covered the area in darkness. SurferSorbet used two arms to protect his face and chest while the third continued holding his spear. He crossed the flames despite the burns spreading over his body. Chibi sent his controlled skull toward the Oni, but SurferSorbet shattered it with a swing of his sword. The demon attempted to retreat deeper into the forest, throwing more fire behind him. SurferSorbet’s spear pierced through the darkness and struck Chibi’s defense. The Oni grabbed him with one arm and threw him against a burning tree. Before Chibi could recover, SurferSorbet struck again, eliminating a member of his own faction without hesitation. Maris, after killing Space, searched for another isolated angel. She found Containment moving through the lower ruins. The monk was accompanied by his serpent, which remained close to the ground and sensed movement around them. Maris fired a dart from the trees. The demon who specialized in debuffs was defeated by the same kind of weapon she had mastered. By nightfall, the angels still possessed a structured alliance, but they had already lost three members.
