but i think the reason ELO is flawed currently is bc it’s being used as a measure of “these people are the most skilled at this game mode” - when in reality, other games that use ELO or other ranking systems are skill-based games that don’t have a social component. like the reality is if i log onto chess dot com having never played chess and i’m paired with a chess professional, i’m just not gonna win ever bc they spend every waking moment studying the game and have logged hundreds of thousands of hours. i DO think some people are more skilled at social strategy games bc they’re better socially or have stronger strategic instincts, but the reality is in a community like this it becomes very “you fucked me over last game so i’m gonna fuck you over here” or “you were good to me last time so i owe you here” - and that’s not skill that’s cosplaying as johnny bananas the two things i think could make elo better are: - fully random matchmaking. oftentimes random recruits on BB outplay the superfans, and i don’t necessarily think we need to throw all the new/untalented people into one shitty pig sty lobby. if you apply for a reality television game show, you may just be a better player than the people you’re cast with. or you may be worse! that’s just kinda how it works. high-ELO lobbies just become favor for a favor contests and tend to benefit the least employed. - maybe some sort of algorithm that builds casts from lobbies based on people who haven’t played together as frequently. this combats premades (at least sometimes?) and allows a somewhat fresh experience each time. to be clear i’m just complaining and don’t know how any of these changes would work! and i enjoy the games and will continue to play them. i’m just yapping!

is if you see a game mode designed with restrictions in place to combat premades, and your immediate thought is “well i should still join with a premade” you’re a ginormous loser
