PhD candidate here. For the vast majority of people, it does not matter what you major in. The majority of people I know who majored in x subject now are in careers that are totally unrelated. Sure it may matter if you want to be an accountant or a nurse, but for most people - this isn't true. A liberal arts education is a well-rounded path that can lead to a variety of careers. And if anything, your specified job market and the city you live in matter more than any specified major.
